Oxford Open City 2002 celebrated the ancient history and modern culture of Oxford by creating new opportunities for local residents and visitors to appreciate the built and natural heritage of their city while enjoying inspirational performances and workshops across the Jubilee weekend. Thousands of local people and visitors came to see performers across the city in spaces including Broad St, the Quad of All Souls College and the Old Boxing Club. The festival also linked with the national Jubilee celebrations for a Gun Salute from University Parks, the national musical beacon from the Pitt Rivers Museum and a Beacon Lighting at South Park with a firework burst over the city.
Oxford Open City 2002 was funded by The Heritage Lottery Fund, Oxfordshire County Council, Oxford City Council, South Oxfordshire District Council, Cherwell District Council, Oxford Preservation Trust and the University of Oxford.
The festival also received support from Oxuniprint, Herbert Mallam Gowers Solicitors, and Oxford Playhouse and would not have been possible without the substantial efforts of staff at all the venues and the performers, artists and others involved in the production of events.
